Anime Review 0.9 Mahou Sensei Negima.

Anime Review 0.9 Mahou Sensei Negima.

Ever had a manga that you loved so much? When your first saw the trailer for that anime adaptation you get so excited because it’s finally being animated on screen. Then you finally watched and that show just failed to deliver your expectations.

Well some really poplar manga series like Tokyo Ghoul, Black Butler and Akame Ga Kill received bad adaptations that all went for a anime original route in the end.

Mahou Sensei Negima is a another victim of this bad adaptation trend because Xebec took the fairly poplar Ecchi/Harem,Shouen manga by a man named  Ken Akamatsu and shoving  it into a 26 episodes anime series which for a long running manga series is kinda bad because you will only able to adapt the first couple of volumes of the manga before going to a anime original route.

Mahou Sensei Negima is a anime series that came out too early because the manga was still on-going at the time when the anime was still airing.

Hello everyone TheCodeTrigger and today’s review will be Mahou Sensei Negima from Studio Xebec

Mahou Sensei Negima was directed by Habara, Nobuyoshi and it constants of 26 episodes airing from Jan 6, 2005 too Jun 30, 2005. So is it one of the worse adaptations? Let’s find out

The story of Negima takes place in a large private school of Mahora Academy where the main characters have begin they first year in middle school .While elsewhere in England a organisation of magic wielders have assigned  magic school graduate Negi Springfield a job to become a professional teacher at set school…

Oh wait he just show up because Xebec isn’t smart enough to adapt the first scene probably.

Oh wait they did adapted it but its only in the Mahou Sensei Neigma Introduction Film more on that later.

So already on the first day of the job he’s already been found a girl named Asuna Kaguarzaka after he saved a girl named Nodoka Miyazaki by using his magic to stop Nodoka from falling to the ground.

After that nothing really happens. Sure there’s the confrontation of Negi and Evangeline and a few other bits but compare to the manga it feels so rushed.

You see half of the series feels like unnecessarily filler. There’s no engaging plot, no great villains, character development is almost non-existent here.

One of the most important arcs of the Negima manga is revolving Kyoto and Negi trying to find out why his father left him. But in the anime is like oh we are going to Kyoto to mess around then we will fight some bad guys and then we just buzz off back to school. We don’t get any  character development of Negi, no progressive story and a complete waste of episode length.

Oh the world building of Negima has been watered down. Compare the manga where they go into more detail of the school and later on the world. It’s not almost non existence like Akame Ga Kill where they main city hasn’t got a memorable name and the people in the imperial capital are just lifeless.

Overall the story is kinda lacklustre at best

The characters in Negima are good and interesting on paper but most of them are just kinda a letdown.

Negi is a our main protagonist who is assigned to teach 31 female students at Mahora Academy. To be frank honest with and it’s sad to say this Negi is my least favourite character in this season. It’s not because I don’t like him or anything in fact in the manga, ova and ever Negima!? he was my one of my favourite characters in Negima.

The real reason why he’s my least favourite character is that fact is his character development has been watered down heavily plus he’s more of a wimp than anything.

This is like where Kaneki in Tokyo Ghoul Root A where throughout the show he just a emotionless dog that has no soul or care.

Overall Negi was a really disappointing character.

Asuna is likeable I guess but once again she so much better in the manga. Plus is sad to see my second favourite girl from Negima become borderline useless because she doesn’t really do anything besides from caring for Negi as well as being a annoying Tsundere. I know she’s like this in Negima!? and the in the Manga but least she has really good character development and she is a really likeable and relatable character. Here she is likeable but for the wrong reason because in the second half something bad happens to her which btw never happened in the manga whatsoever and I found character development to be forced.

Overall she is a okay character.

The rest of the characters are okay I guess. Bedsides a few other characters that I liked like SetsunaChachamaru KarakuriNagi Springfield and Ayaka Yukihiro I found the rest of the chararters to be forgettable.

The only other character that am going in more detail is Evangeline who is the main villain for the first few episodes.

She’s is a really good character in my but the only I have with her is the fact is she doesn’t get enough screen time to do anything in the story. She could have been best girl if the show adapted her probably.

Overall I still like Evangeline here but compare to her Manga counterpart, the OVA series and surprisingly Negima!? she feels so flat.

This is just sad because what I read so far in the manga this character cast was great and Negi was a actually likeable and relatable character.

Overall this is a disappointing cast to otherwise an amazing cast in a manga, Negima!? and the ova series.

Mahou Sensei Negima was done by Studio Xebec who also did D.N Angel, Pandora Hearts, Shaman King and Shuffle and to be frank honest with you Xebec isn’t that good of a studio and it’s for a very good reason. You see Xbeck has this pattern that they will take a popular manga series and they don’t even adapt it right. In case of what I mean look at the first season of Too Love RU, Okay I haven’t seen the series yet but what I heard first Too Love Ru season was heavily butred.

This is where It really gets bad.

OMG I never seen a anime this cheaply made in my life like seriously the characters designs here are just plan horrid to look at.

All of the characters look like fucking dirt because Studio Xebec thought is a good idea to you MS freaking paint on the characters deigns. To add insult in injury some of the characters hairs have changed. I seriously don’t know of what Xebec was thinking because in the introduction film everyone and I mean everyone had the right hair colour.

Also the background scenery looks terrible and there is barely any life to it at all. I know this came out in 2005 but there’s no excuse. Great Teacher Onizuka came out in 1999 and they was more compare to this

Toei animation would be proud with this.

Lastly the fan=service. Never before I seen such poor usage of fan-service in my life. It doesn’t have too much fan-service unlike in Rosario Vampire but Negima designs to be unique with the fan-service. Well by having barely any form of fan-service whatsoever!!!

Also in the introduction film there was more fan-service and it was use in the way that would make sense unlike here where they just dumb down the fan-service…

Okay there are a few things that I liked about the animation well for started the fights on the last episodes were actually rotatable because it was actually smooth and somewhat consistent. Sure its not ht best thing but at this I got too least say something decent about the art/animation.

Overall the art/animation really killed show for me

The ost surprising good because it fits the nature of the show perfectly and it’s a really enjoyable to listen

The opening theme called Happy Material and to be honest with you I actually liked this song because it’s so catchy and upbeat.

The ending theme is actually really good in my opinion and for me it’s only of the best things about this show because everything else from story to characters just fail hard.

Now for dub or sub?

To be honest with you the dub on paper is quite good but in reality is one of the worst dubs I have ever heard in my life.

Why? Greg Ayers as Negi Springfield that why.

His voice is so bad that I decided to watch it sub while in the making of this review. The first time I watched Negima Dub I wanted to cry when Greg Ayres

as Negi started talking because his voice is so freaking bad and ear-bleeding painful.

Besides from Greg Ayers god awful performance as Negi the rest of the characters did a solid job in they roles and they actually brought more life to the world of Negima.

Leah Clark as Nodoka.

Luci Christian as Asuna.

Laura Bailey as Evangeline and Ayaka.

Overall the OST was good, OP and EN were great and a good dub ruined by Grey Ayers as Negi Springfield

I really liked the OST because it sound wonderful to hear a j.pop in a school setting.

Also I liked Asuna even tho in the later half her character was butchered because something bad happens to Asuna in the anime when in the manga that so called Asuna ark never existed.

Besides from Negi I found this to good dub because the dubs like I!!!!!

Overall I personally got some enjoyment of this show

Final Thoughts.

This has got to be the worst anime adaptation I have ever seen life because its takes away everything that made Negima great and turned it into a another bland harem show.

It has a weak story, some of the characters were butchered or didn’t get enough screen time, trash tier art and animation, a good OST and good dub ruined by one VA.

This is by far Studio Xebec worst anime that they ever done.

Sure D.N Angel and Pandora Hearts had mediocre to weak endings however unlike Negima that actually have a great start. Negima has none of that whatsoever.

When people say Tokyo Ghoul is the worst anime adaptation they not seen the hell of Mahou Sensei Negima because least with Tokyo Ghoul they decently adapted the first season while Root A went for a anime original route. This piece of shit doesn’t know if it wants to be a anime original or a adaptation that follows closely plus they butchered the characters so much that they aren’t the same characters anymore. Not to mention the art and animation was so bad they had to change the animation staff and they had to fix stuff like poor colouring, deformed faces and choppy animation on the DVDs.

Mahou Sensei Negima may be a bad adaptation but least than Akame Ga Kill with the second half being butchered to hell from story, characters and even art/animation quality and at times looks a anime that came out from the early 2000s if you removed the HD.

And am going to say this but I don’t recommend this show.

If you want to see anything Negima related go read the manga or alternately go watch Negima!? and the OVA series.

I give Mahou Sensei Negima  a 3/10 (Not really a garage adaptation but it’s one hell of a wasted potential adaptation)

Anime Review 0.8 Slayers Part 1/3

Anime Review 0.8 Slayers Part 1/3

I will be reviewing this one very differently compare to my other reviews so far.

Slayers is a series that was adapted from a series of light novels in 1995 spawning two seasons Slayers and Slayers next while Slayers Try is an original story in the Slayers universe. They also adapted the Movie and OVA series after Slayers Try expect for Slayers the motion picture which that film was released the same time where the first season of Slayers was airing. Then 14 years later Slayers was brought back to fame in 2009 which they released Slayers Revolution and Slayers Evolution-R.

For this review I will be reviewing Slayers, Slayers Next and Slayers Try and I don’t be touching Slayers Revolution and Evolution-R because I personally have mixed thoughts towards them.

Also this series of reviews will be split into three parts where I cover each season individually.

The first season of Slayers was directed by Takashi Watanabe and it consists of 26 episodes airing from April 7th 1995 to September 29 1995.

Now with that out the way let’s start with the first season of Slayers.

Our story begins with Lina Inverse a wonder soucsers who goes around town defeating bandits stealing rare treasures from them and selling those rare treasures for an exchange of gold where Lina can just eat all day in various restaurants that she goes to. One day Lina meets a swordsman called Gorry while in a fight with a bunch a bandits. After that Lina and Gorry begin an adventure where they fight enemies like Rezo as well as make new allies with Zelios and Ameila.

You see Slayers is the anime equivalent to Dungeons and Dragons. And not just because of the high fantasy art style, but in every aspect.

Now I found the humour of slayers to be hilarious because the jokes and humour for the most part are great and it brings life to the world of slayers. But it times the jokes can be redundant  and may be annoying for some but I personally have no complements with the jokes and humour because I them to be fresh and unique.

One of the few things that I don’t like about this is the pacing for the first half and trust me it can get really slow at times. This can ultimately ruined this season for some viewer but personally I didn’t mind the pacing that to be honest.

Now let’s talk about world building of Slayers.

The world of Slayers is a very familiar to people who played games like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest where they in a group of fighters with they selected classed fight against monster sometimes other human that are also in parties and boss as well as travel around the world doing mission, side quest, learning new skills like magic, sword techniques and all of the good RPG stuff.

Slayers manages to keep most of those RPG in tack and it’s just wonderful to see many of these stuff that you will see in JRPG games animated in Slayers.

Also the locations of Slayers are just really good and very detailed for 90s because all of the locations are very memorable like the Seyruum Kingdom  Atlas City, Zelgadis’ hideout and may more.

All and all the story and world building of Slayers is great.

Lina Inverse is our main female lead and to be honest with you she’s actually one of the best female leads in anime and as well as being one of the best written tsuderes period.

Lina despite her being money hungry and being short-tempered she does display that she can be quite the admirable heroine when she needs to be.

When she joins forces with Gorrry it was only temporarily alliance(because mainly Lina wants’ Gorry sword so she can sell it for gold) but as this season progresses Lina forms a bond with Gorry and completely forgets about the taking stealing Gorry Sword.

Now unlike most other Tsuderes like Shana (Shakagun No Shana) for example she’s bearable and at the same lovable because unlike Taiga where in the first half she was an unbearable but with Lina she has funny and at the same time a badass and a good-looking at that.

Overall she is just an adorable character to me and she’s easily my female character in anime period and also I found her to be underrated.;

Gorry is a wonder swordsman who tends to follow Lina as her bodyguard.

He is known as the idiot but very powerful swordsman. His swordsman skills are A class and he has this sword of light were it cut.

Now this has to be said. Out of all the main characters in slayers he is by far my least favourite. This is mainly because I just couldn’t relate to him and him being a idiot got repetitive. I know in Slayers Next he becomes more likable but here I just couldn’t relate to him whatsoever.

Overall I still like Gorry but not as much as the rest.

Zelgadis Greywords is the first former villain for the first 6 episodes the season or to break it up the first 6 episodes of Slayers.

However this all changes where he unties Lina from a hanging rope and decides to join Lina and Gorry in the quest of defeating Rezo as well as having his own goal of gaining his human body back.

I personally liked him because I like the way he changes from a temporary Vivian to a friendlier member of the slayers.

Overall Zelgadis is a great character.

Lastly we have Amelia Wil Tesla Sailune who is the princess of the Kingdom Of Saillune.

Am just going to say this right now up to recently I wrote her off as a guilty pleasure because I use to find her to be annoying due to her justice act. But a re-watching the series again in 2015 I started to like her more because I found her to quite a loveable character because she is one hell of a funny ass character that always make laugh every time she does something funny.

Overall I really like Amelia.

Now the rest of the characters can be hit or miss depending on your tastes.

To be honest besides from Rezo, Zangalus and Sylphiel I found the rest of the characters in Season 1 to be one note.

Overall this is a fairly great character cast.

Slayers was done by J.C Staff that also gave us. Raildex, Toradora, Kare Kano, Shougeki No Souma, Shangan No Shana and Prison School.

The art in self least in season 1 has aged surprisingly really well for an anime that came out in 1995. The colours are bright and bold especially with the backgrounds and scenery which brings life to the setting of Slayers.

However unlike it’s squeals being Slayers Next and Slayers Try the art at times can be dated escapcally with the some of the character models looking too washed up. I know it’s a 90s anime but compare to its squeals and other 90s anime like Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion this one feels flat at times.

The character deigns of Slayers are great and very memorable from the wonderful designed iconic Lina, the mysterious wonder half human and half golem Zelgadis to the creative enemies like fishes with arms and legs.

The animation itself is good but not the best because unlike Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop and the first half of Evangelion it was obsessive that Slayers didn’t have the best animation.

It’s also has that dragon ball feel to it because the way some of the characters use the magic spells.

If you’re used to newer animation you may not like the animation here.

Besides the few problem that I had. I think the art and animation has aged quite well.

The OST for this season is great for the most part with great and memorable tracks like Oh What Lovely Lina, I want this world, heroic action and many more. But the OST can be repetitive at times and I know it’s the first season but it can be annoying for some viewers.

It also has that fantasy feel into it and it fits the world of Slayers perfectly.

Now for Sub vs Dub debit for Slayers.

Am just going to flat honest with you guys I have only seen the first 7 episodes of Slayers subbed. Why? Because I mainly watched all the seasons dubbed and let me tell you this. I wasn’t a fan of the subbed at all not saying is an original audio is bad or annoying like watching ghost stories in original audio but I it just doesn’t feel the same show.

So is the dub of the first seasons of Slayers perfect. No in fact the first thirteen episodes the dub is kind of off not Escaflowne and Evangelion bad but it had a few audio issues like the first dubs actors of Amelia and Zelgadis and it clearly shows. Thankfully the dub becomes much better around the second half where we voice actors of Amelia and Zelgadis got replace with good actors as well as the dub lip syncing has improved and everything in the sound department just improves. The dub can still get cheesy at times but least it’s better than the first half.

I think Lisa Ortiz as Lina Inverse was the best role because she’s was just so consistent with Lina and She made Slayers more enjoyable.

Now which is one is better reyou may ask?

I know a lot of people will say subbed but am going to honest with you guys I rather pick the DUB.

I really had a blast with one.

All of the fights in my opinion were well planned and executed. The humour never got trying for me being it always made me laugh when the crew does a good joke. Also I loved how the dub improved as this season progressed because not many anime that I seen has a dub that starts off bad but improves overtime. Slayers is one of the series that has dub that starts off bad but later on it becomes a great dub in my opinion.

I liked the old art-style of this season sure at times it can be a bit washed out but for what it is it looked good in my opinion.

One more thing that I like to point out is the OST for slayers is just fantastic. It’s easily one of my favourite anime OST period.

Final Thoughts

Overall Slayers is a fantastic 90’s anime that should not missed by anyone.

It’s has a great story, well written characters memorable OST, art may be outdated to some but still looks good and has that nostalgic feel on it.

The only few problems that I had with the season is the pacing can get really slow at times and the dub for the first 13 episodes were kinda off in the audio department with only two characters sounding terrible during these episodes

I highly recommend you go check out this anime because I think is an anime classic and it definitely holds up with other classic animes like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai X and Outlaw Star.

I give Slayers Season 1 a 9/10 ( A must watch)

Slayers is available on DVD from Funimation Entertainment in the US while in the UK is available from  MVM Entertainment.

At this time of the review I don’t own the first season of DVD but I will be buying sometime soon.

Anime Review 0.7 Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki : Wolf Children

Anime Review 0.7 Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki : Wolf Children

Hey, everybody TheCodeTrigger here and welcome to my first ever anime movie review.

For my first ever anime movie review I will be reviewing the highly acclaimed movie that was directed by a man named Hosoda, Mamoru and aired in Juyl 21st in 2012 Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki or Wolf Children in English.

Now with that out for the way let’s begin.

Enter Hana a 19 year college student who meets the love of her dreams named

Ookami who is secretly hiding his identity as being able to transform into a wolf at any-time throughout his life. He’s not a werewolf where he doesn’t tear up other people and as well eat other animals like rabbits or any other animal. He just has this affrication its something that has been with him ever since the day he was born and he’s the last person in his line to have half human and half wolf species and that stuff kinda happens. Eventually Hana gives birth to two children named Ame and Yuki and as well as they have this similar wolf gene . She has to try raise them and which that comes with problems. They problems are they can transform any-time like for example in a city with lots of people and they just transform in wolfs all of these problems arise that Hana has to move out from her home-town to the countryside to rise her children, learning to be a farmer so they can all survive and also not really knowing the other-side of her kids.

I found the story to we well executed from start to finish because it had a amazing set-up that is easy for the viewer to understand and keep up the of the key events of they story like where Hene has to grow her own crops for the first so they and the children can survive, the problems of Ame school has he always use to be the one to get bullied all the time to the latter half of the movie where the children have grown up they make some shocking decisions that I won’t here because due to spoilers.

This is easily one of if not the best-written anime movie I have ever seen. Even with the time jumps that the story has the story is always constant and it doesn’t have any plot holes whatsoever.

The ending itself which I won’t spoil here is some of the best anime endings I have ever seen in any form of media. The ending itself is just so heartbreaking that you need to a set of tissue roles when watching the ending of Wolf Children.

Overall the story is a masterpiece and easily one of the best anime movies stories I have ever seen.

All of the characters in Wolf Children are written so beautiful that you will definitely relate to these characters from start to finish

Hene is now the mother of these children by that she has to move out of her hometown to look after these kids and as well as being a farmer at the same time. I found Hene to be very realistic because not only she gave up her home just to keep her children safe from harm but she also has to learn how to be a farmer and at times of the film you actually see her struggle because there’s is no one helping her whatsoever and she has to farm correctly so they can survive in the countryside.

Overall she is just wonderful anime mother and easily the best mother of anime in my opinion.

Yuki is the oldest of the two children and surprisingly she is also the voice narrator of this film.

Yuki is a energetic and outgoing girl she’s is one of girls that is not afraid to get her hands dirty because she is seen playing around with mud without any consequence. In her childhood years she was one of those girls that is always seeing for attention tended to throw tantrums when everything didn’t go her way. Almost like a Tsundrere ^_^

While her Kindergarten years she is trying she always wanted to become someone she that was not. Similar to a another character from a series that I reviewed already. Yukino Miyazawa (Kare Kano)

Also throughout this film she is seen protecting her brother from anyone’s that is trying to bully him.

She’s personally my favourite in this movie because she is so fun to watch from birth to adulthood and she’s is one hell of a entraining character.

Overall I really liked her.

Ame is the youngest of the two children.

Ame is a really shy and fearful person that during his childhood day’s years he always relays on his parents and as well stick to his parents like some from of super glue. Also during his elementary years he was always the kid that gets bullied and ultimately always got in trouble when is clearly not his fault. In the last parts of the film he just becomes a completely different person where he makes certain decision that affects the family of how they live. I won’t mention it here because that can lead to heavy spoilers.

I personally found him to be great character because the way he changes throughout the film is realistic and heart-warming.

Overall Ame is a great character.

The rest of the characters do a great job of being side characters and they way they interact with each of the main characters is just wonderful.

All on all this character cast is just wonderful.

Am just going to say this right now this is easily the best-looking anime film I have ever seen.

The backgrounds are either very well detailed or just fit the world of Wolf Children really well.

In fact the amount of detail is just stunning to look at both the BLU RAY and surprisingly the DVD versions as well.

The animation is so just so wonderful and appealing to the eye.

Everything from characters to backgrounds are just so well animated that you will feel life while watching the film.

Madhouse really did a great job with animation and art department.

Where do I begin with this OST?

Oh, my god, the OST for Wolf Children is easily the best OST I ever heard from a anime movie period.

All of the tracks were very memorable and they fit very well in the world of wolf’s children.

Now should you watch this film Sub or Dub? Am just going, to be honest, right now I never saw this film subbed and it’s for a very good reason because the dub of this film is easily one of the best if not the best English dubbed film I have ever heard in my life.

All of the dub actors did an amazing job with the roles and they really sound professional here.

Overall this OST is wonderful and the dub is a masterpiece.

I personally enjoyed this film from start to finish because the story was really well told as well as the characters and the character interactions

I really adored the art and animation here because it just so beautiful to look at and the world is so lively.

Final Thoughts.

For the longest time, this movie was in my PTW up to now when some of my friends just told me to watch this film because they say it was a masterpiece and I can defiantly say this right now.

This movie is a masterpiece.

It has a really touching story, beautifully written, wonderful characters, has some of the best art and animation I have ever seen in a anime film, a fantastic OST and it has the best English dub that I ever heard from a anime film period.

It’s a must watch for anyone who is looking for a parent carer film.

By the time of this review, I will be the buying this film brand new on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Now normally I will give 10/10 to anime that I really adore but a anime like Wolf Children breaks the scale of 1 to 10.

I give Wolf’s Children an 11/10 (My favourite anime film period)
